Camping Birthday

Here are the pictures from Baby Girl's 8th Camping Birthday.

It was simple. I'm happy with what we did.  I have found ways to improve (such a teacher... always).

However, my baby girl was HAPPY!

Cake pops shaped like marshmallows... lantern from Target (it's solar and is awesome at night in her bedroom).

Cupcakes (digital fun added)

Baby Girl helping.

The table... fruit kabobs, cake pops, cupcakes, create your own trail-mix -- FUN!

Time to plan a birthday party!

My kids are deprived... we do birthday parties (with friends) every-other-year.  I know... mean, right?!?

Well, it works for us me.

September begins birthday parties for the next 6 months.

Baby Girl has decided on a camping party (I said camping, not sleepover... I'm not crazy!) and Pinterest has provided a gaggle of ideas for us to peruse and choose from!

She definitely wants cake pops!

A gift for friends?

S'more station... yum... maybe too much with the cake pops?

Table... so fun!

A tent to hang out in... our green coleman will have to do!

I'm thinking we need to add a craft... please pass along any camping craft ideas... after the party I'll post our actual pictures... happy camping!

2 cute

It's Saturday morning and I have a couple of minutes to spare (shocking, I know)!

I'm checking in with a few of my favorite blogs and I didn't get very far when I found this to print and make with baby girl... so cute! And... I think she will love them. I'm going to print them on card stock, I think.

That's as far as I got in reading my favorite blogs before I had to share.

Off to swim lessons (and hopefully a workout for Mama).

Crafting and Organizing

I had 48 hours to enjoy without any homework, projects or finals looming over my head. I managed to get a little crafting and organizing in....

It doesn't look like much, but trust me... see those cookbooks... see the yellow binder... I filled the binder with all of the loose recipes that we've printed. The cookbooks had fallen down, the loose recipes were EVERYWHERE... it was a mess! (I forgot to take an original photo.)

Now... they are neat and tidy. I even have dividers in the binder. I used the thick cookbooks to keep the stack from tumbling over... yeah... this project took about 10 minutes and it's been bugging me for months. Why do we (I) wait to solve a problem that can be solved in minutes?

Baby Girl grows very quickly... we give her outgrown clothes to a special friend. Well, one dress, in particular hit a nerve with her... it wasn't one of her better moments. There were tears and sadness... so, we made her a new dress from an idea from special friends mom. It turned out great and better yet it was quick. I used my 50% off coupon from Joanne's for the fabric. I didn't even know you could buy fabric that was already "smocked" (I think that is the right term.) I bought 24" of it to fit around baby girl ($4 and change). Came home turned it right sides together, sewed a seam, added ribbons and hemmed it... done!

Pepe's 2nd grade teacher (from last year) is pregnant expecting baby girl #1. I am very excited for her and saw these hats on this blog last week. I had to give them a try. They are fast, cute and extremely inexpensive. I hope she likes them! It's HAT day at school tomorrow so we thought we'd sent them along for baby's first hats.

You know you're loved when...

You really know that your husband loves you when he empties a container (after making dinner) and saves it for you knowing that you can use it for something. It's even better when he says you can use some pretty paper and make it look nice...

I am loved!

Call me crazy...

I was asked (coerced) into joining an Altered Book group... my first question... what is that? Well check out this, this and this and then you will know. Basically, you take a book and "scrap" it into something completely different. There are amazing people out there that actually make old books into pieces of art... they are truly talented.

I am simple, but I enjoy my creative time. So, even though I've started another class towards my Masters degree, I have committed and started the project... guess what? It's very fun and I am very excited about the end result.

Thanks Karmyn for 'asking' me to join ;).

Reduce, Reuse, Organize

The garbage hadn't been picked up for three weeks... I was going crazy. I love garbage day... it's a fresh start for me each week. Watching my garbage and recycling accumulate for three weeks disgusts me. I've been cleaning and organizing during our Arctic Blast these last weeks and generating more 'stuff' to get rid of. I was down to one of my last projects (not last projects in the house... don't get me wrong) to complete during vacation... the kids art supplies. I was ready to dump the crayon tub, the marker tub, paper tub and just start over. But, I thought of all of my garbage and recycling sitting at the curb and decided to be more frugal about the process.

I began with the crayons... do we need 10,000 crayons for three kids. NO... they don't appreciate their crayons. Why pick them or not break them when you have 10,000. So, I began sorting. I love crayola crayons, so I pulled all that was left out of the box. I was left with 9,000 crayons... so I sorted them back into their containers to drop off at an undisclosed location (thrift store). I wanted them to look nice so that they would get a new home (what's wrong with me). See the brown basket... I picked that up at the undisclosed location while dropping off a huge bag. I think it will work beautifully for the everyday art supplies.
  • set of markers
  • set of crayons
  • scissors
  • glue/ tape
  • pencils / sharpener
  • ruler

Don't you think that a child will love these organized crayons? I sure do. My kids are left with a manageable amount.

Same process with the markers. I really think that because we had so many, the kids didn't have a need to care for them. I was appalled by the number of markers that I had to throw away. Here is what we are left with... no pink, red, etc. In due time, I will buy a new set and we will have a set of markers. I'll let you know if my experiment works.

Ah... organized in the basket. But wait... I really thought that I'd be getting rid of the big organizer, but I couldn't justify it. I have it, it works... it just needed to be tweaked. It is now organized and labeled. I don't have a fancy label maker (would love one) so I used my handy pen and sticky notes cut in thirds with a fresh piece of tape. The art area is now the family art area... it's now just the kids. I've added some of my supplies... I let the kids use them anyway, we may as well store them together. I also moved the art area to the laundry room. They can do art at any time... maybe this will help all of us. I feel good about the things I got rid of and even better that I didn't dump the entire thing and start over. There is a time and a place to dump it all and begin again, but his wasn't one of those times. Reduce, reuse and organize!

More crafting... with Baby Girl

At last count we had 13" of snow... which is unheard of here! So, we are continuing with our crafts. Baby Girl got this puppet kit awhile back, it was the perfect day to sew and sew and sew. She had a great time... she sewed the big pieces together and glued on the small pieces. We decided, that since we had time, we'd keep sewing... so I sewed on the little pieces for her. I think she may be addicted to it!

Oh, and look what she got for Christmas...

a sewing kit! It's filled with embroidery floss, fabric and a hoop. She's very excited.

Time for a Craft

I've made many blankets, of course not one for me, but that is okay. These blankets are easy to make, yet warm and comforting. My husband loves his so when he drew my Dad's name for Christmas he immediately panicked... what will I get for your Dad? (Hmmm, that's the same question I've had forever.) So, he very sweetly asked for me to make him a blanket to give to my Dad. So... since I'm snowed in and the fabric has been washed for days there's no time like the present...

By the way, my Dad has a slight obsession with tractors.

3 days and counting

It's been snowing since Friday... I've lived here for 33.5 years and NEVER seen this much snow. It is amazing. I finished the scarf for my sister... I will post a picture of it on her. I've cleaned out old papers and such. Next up we will make Christmas tags*, and take the sewing machine out.

* Christmas tags -- saw a cute idea in an old magazine. Trace cookie cutters onto pretty paper (scrapbook paper), cute out and embellish. Place them on your Christmas packages, in wreaths, on the tree, etc.We went for a family "night walk". It was beautiful... yes, I was in my pjs. I got dressed yesterday in them... my kids thought that I was crazy... I was so cozy. This may become a habit.

And so it begins...

We host hubby's Christmas party each year... time to make the invitations. With the craziness of the fall, I haven't been very crafty. It was very nice to sit, relax and use the "other" side of my brain.

They are simple. In an effort to simplify my life, I want to also simplify Christmas. I want it to be special, but simple.

Photo 2: The inspiration. I pulled out an old crafting magazine and fell in love with this card, but I had already started cutting out all of my 'trucks'. So, I decided to incorporate the tree.

While I had everything out, I made the 'thank you' cards for Pepe's soccer coaches.

Tie-DyeFun

To celebrate 'Rainbow' week at school we tackled tie-dying with 5 year olds! I must admit, that I have been humbled. To prepare for this... my anxiety was peeked.... How will I tie-dye with 5 years olds and have it be successful and have them not go home blue?!?!?! Well, my friends... 5 year olds are incredible. Besides the, "Is it my turn yet?" every 5 minutes, they followed directions, had fun and experimented. I was overjoyed when they experienced for themselves EVERYTHING that we had been talking about with colors. Red and Yellow really do make orange, Yellow and Blue really do make green, etc. Exciting stuff in my class.

If YOU are a tie-dyer and happen to see this post... help me... when I rinsed all of the shirts the colors were clear and the whites were white. After drying the shirts, the whites are dingy. How can I improve upon my process? Please share!

Crafting with the kids

With inspiration from here the kids created their own 4th of July rocks. I only wish that I'd have prepared sooner and gone out to find some great rocks. We settled for rocks we found in our yard... which were pretty small. Next time we're out exploring we will definitely look for nice rocks to paint. The kids are waiting for their creations to dry... so that they can add more paint!

Baby Girl - age 4 1/2

Finneous - Age 6 1/2

Pepe - Age 8

When I uploaded the pictures it was very interesting to see their paint progression by age.

4th of July Banner

I've seen these cute banners around and decided to create one for the 4th of July. I used material left over from a quilt that my Aunt and cousin made for me 11years ago when I got married. I cut it into triangles, pinned bias tape (could use ribbon, I think) to the top and stitched the entire thing together. Took about an hour (without kid interruptions) to complete.

Here is Baby Girl in front of the banner.
